WHAT TO EXPECT from armor coatings
Every project is unique, so your epoxy floor coating installation will depend on the application type chosen, any desired decorative elements, and the size and condition of your surface(s). But generally speaking, our epoxy floor installers perform a series of common steps. Here is the typical process.
PREP the surfaceFirst, we thoroughly grind and clean the surface to remove any sealants or contaminants. This opens up the "pores" of the concrete and ensures it will bond properly with your chosen flooring application.
|
REPAIR the surfaceNext, we inspect the surface and perform any necessary repairs to your concrete. This may include filling cracks, patching defects, or leveling the surface to ensure a smooth, long-lasting finish.
|
BASE COAT applicationOnce the concrete surface is properly cleaned and repaired, it's ready to accept the base coat application. This coat cures tightly to the surface, creating a strong, durable bond with the concrete.
|
decorative FlakesIf decorative flakes are desired, they are applied directly following the base coat. Armor Coatings has many beautiful in-stock flake options, or we can special order the perfect color for your project.
|
top COAT applicationDepending on your desired finish, one or two top coats will be applied to seal and protect your new floors and give them a sleek, stylish look. You can typically walk or drive on your new floors after 48 hours.

Frequently asked questions (FAqs)
Q: How long does an epoxy floor coating installation usually take?
A: It depends on the size, condition, and complexity of your surface, but in general, most floors are cured and ready for foot and vehicle traffic after 2 days.
Q: Is concrete floor refinishing less expensive than installing new concrete?
A: Refinishing a concrete surface costs much less than completely tearing out an old floor and pouring new concrete. It's also more environmentally friendly. Every epoxy floor coating installation varies in cost based on square feet, current surface condition, and desired finishes. We're happy to take a look at your space and give you a free estimate.
Q: Is there anything I should do to prepare for my new epoxy floor coating installation?
A: Thanks for asking! Before install day, please clear your floor of anything and everything. Vehicles, machinery, tools, furniture, storage items, your sister's ex-boyfriend's bike, etc. We need to be able to inspect, clean, and work on the entire floor at once to ensure a seamless, quality finished product.
Q: What's better, smooth epoxy floors or flake floors?
A: It really comes down to personal preference and style. Smooth floors tend to look more elegant and modern. Flake floors are a wonderful option for garages and other heavily-used spaces. But there is no right or wrong answer as both options are durable and beautiful. Schedule a free consultation and we'll be happy to talk through your options!
Q: Are floor coatings slippery?
A: Armor Coatings has options to make epoxy floor coatings slip resistant. We can go over them during your consultation. We want your new floor to be beautiful AND safe!
Q: Is there an odor during the floor coating process?
A: Yes, while the products are being applied and drying, there will be a noticeable odor. It dissipates as the floor cures and is usually gone in a day or two. If this could be a problem for you, we recommend not being home during the installation process. Please let us know if this is the case so we have a plan for accessing your home.
Q: Is the floor coating installation process dusty or messy?
A: Armor Coatings takes pride in our workmanship and we do our best to keep a clean jobsite. However, during the grinding process, it can get dusty even with our vacuum filters. If there is an attached space you want to keep clean, we can partition off the room with plastic to keep the dust contained as much as possible.
